Three categories to think about:

  1. The traditional Response
  2. An in-service activity

Katie Edwards: 5 Things youth workers should know.

Amanda Anderson: All My Friends Have Issues

“You need to be able to relate in a healthy and safe way. We are told that we have to “be real” however not everything is able to be shared. If you can do that then you can lead students to do this well.”

“Fun is something that leads to trust and relationships for middle schoolers and can open doors”

Albert Tate: Albert Tate Podcast  Fellowship Monrovia

“Make sure you are pouring your life into those kids and are experiencing community and discipleship. Be satisfied at knowing that the kingdom of God is being expanded because of your labor and investment.”

“Get creative and innovative and when there are opportunities to bless the church and service the senior leadership and affirm and encourage them that they work they are doing is creating spaces for transformation to happen in the lives of these young people”

Halloween tips:

  • Get involved in helping with the kids ministry event

Volunteer Cycle (Justin and Kurt)

  • Enlist
  • Equip
  • Empower
  • Encourage

Tim Harlow author of What made Jesus Mad

  • Don’t give the students an inauthentic Jesus
  • Make your teaching about the vision and passion of Jesus
    • He was not always warm and cuddly
  • You can have righteous anger without adding to the problem
    • Jesus showed restraint at times where we show anger

Phyllis, Middle School Matters

  • Do not minimize their distress. Middle School heartbreak is real heartbreak
  • You will build a wall if you dismiss their pain
  • If they ask about dating engage them in communication and ask open ended questions
  • You need to worry about the kids doing the bullying too and teach them what it means to be kind and civil
  • Encouraging girls in leadership
    • Embrace a broader definition of leadership. You do not have to be outward facing to be a leader.

Mark Oestreicher

  • There is no reason why student leadership should be reserved high schoolers. Give them a taste of the leadership inside them if they are willing.

    • If you have them combined let the jr. high lead too in it
    • If you have separate have one in the jr. high ministry also
  • You want them to participate in things that will form them in powerful ways as their identities are being formed

Excellence in Jr. High Student Leadership Justin, Kurt, and some spiders

  • Give them opportunities to be involved

    • Don’t make your excellent definition so high they cannot participate
    • They will be wrong, but you need to affirm them in a positive way
  • The best way to learn leadership is to learn it in the trenches
    • They love to see their friends owning things
  • Ask other areas if they are open to serving in other areas besides children’s ministry and jr. high ministry
    • It gives them another caring adult in their life

Kenda Dean Student Leadership

  • If you want kids to be engaged as adults get them engaged as children
  • Give them a “load-bearing” role
  • Don’t hold on to tight to the reigns—never do ministry alone
  • With a team, you can share the authority
  • You need a diverse team in outlook and demographics (cause that what the kids are)
  • You must be a trustworthy colleague
  • Learn to pastor your bosses (teach the kids to care for those in authority)
  • Learn how to do youth ministry to grown-ups.
    • We are good at meeting kids where they are but not adults.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Where are our students serving?
  2. Are we allowing middle schoolers to serve as leaders?
  3. Does each of us have someone to do youth ministry with?
  4. Are we meeting our adults where they are as good as we reach our students?

Michele Anderson, Host Talking Squirrels Podcast

Samantha, Girl World EXPERT

Dr. Andrew Root, Youth Ministry Theology EXPERT

Jeff Wallace, Student Leadership EXPERT

Why mic skills are essential with Justin and Kurt

  • If the audio is terrible everything is terrible no matter how good the video/graphics
  • If the person is ill-prepared no matter how much planning it will drain the energy of the room
  • Consider using a handheld—the audio quality is much better and you can use to your advantage with its distance
  • Students will see a potential future for themselves in the person on the microphone
  • Never give the mic away if you don’t know what they will say.
  • If you don’t know whether to use a mic or not—use a mic
  • You have to train people on how to be on a mic—it is not a natural thing

Why you should tune into the CIY webcast

  • It's on the internet, and the internet is awesome
  • Where else do you get a half hour of training for free?
  • This is stuff you can give to your leaders.
  • It is not long and drawn out (only 1 hr)
  • Everything is more significant (than the first) with this webcast
  • It will be encouraging and give you a different way of thinking about things

Scott Rubin—Director of Student Ministries at Willow Creek Church—pastoring with high school in mind

  • Look at them and imagine where they will be in a few years

    • What do we need to be thinking about?
  • Identify gifts in those years and put them on that track to develop it
    • Think ahead but do not get ahead of themselves
    • Give them opportunities to leverage it
    • Sometimes the disruptive kid is the leader. Talk to them about it
  • See if there is an upperclassman that they could be and have them hang around them.
    • Call out to them what you see in them
    • Engage the parents in any way that you can. Some kids might not show themselves, and parents can be a great insight.
  • With leaders moving up or not always remember where you are trying to get the students.
  • Never forget what it is like to be a teenager
  • Never do youth ministry alone

Mike Thomas—Why we stayed podcast

  • Everyone that has stayed/left a different story but they all have friction.

    • How will you respond?
  • When church and God are blended, they become upset with everything. Their whole idea is broken.

Michele Anderson—talking squirrels podcast—adolescent development

  • Early adolescence 10-13
  • It can help to tailor to how the schools do it
  • Reasons for a 7th-9thministry
    • With longer adolescence, students need more time to develop
  • How can we give coaching on mental development
    • Ask them hard questions—they can handle it
  • The psychological difference between boys and girls
    • Girls will grow faster in every way

Samantha—Jr. High Girls

  • The enemy is attacking mainly through technology. Distracting us. And taking away our identity in Jesus with something else.
  • Women should not prove their ability by everything that men do cause men do not do that for women.
    • Elizabeth Elliot—Let me be a Woman
  • Topics Girls need to hear
    • Love, Suicide/depression, homosexuality, technology
  • Always express love

Dr. Andrew Root

  • There are so many things that students need, does God need anything?

    • Don’t think that God needs anything
    • But He is a God that acts for us
    • Out of the love and inner love of the Trinity out of the surplus of their passion they reach out to share their love
    • God chooses to become vulnerable because of his compassion, mercy, and friendship
    • He reaches out for a desire to love and care not because he needs it

Jeff Wallace—Student leadership

  • Gather at most one a month or once a quarter

    • They are busy (and so are their parents who drive them)
    • Have a good plan because time is precious
    • It is not about a shirt or a title
    • Leadership is about keeping your word—have them value being on the leadership team.

EPISODE OUTLINE!

Junior High Webcast coming up with Justin and Kurt on July 2 11 am CST on magnetic middle school ministry. How you can be attractive and missional that kids are drawn too with a missional aspect.

How to make the game time the best it can be—Justin and Kurt (04:37)

  • Design it around the person with the least amount of skill in the room.
  • Don’t do it by gender.
  • Don’t try and force the game into your theme.
  • Don’t force the kids to participate if they don’t want to play.
  • Fun isn’t always games—it can be a skit or a bit on stage.
  • Payoff must be equal or greater than the setup.
  • Be clear and fair. Jr. Higher’s are justice oriented.
  • Once in a while figure out how to involve specials needs students
  • Do fun games but don’t make it the focus.
  • Don’t apologize for doing games. They build trust and learn teamwork.

Youth Ministry Dog (22:30)

Interview Tips (30:43 ) Matt Lewis

  • If you do what you say and show up and honor the commitment, you will be fine
  • Don’t have a scarcity mentality. Fifteen minutes can turn into hours of content when the publicist tells others you honored the agreement.

Isaac Morehouse (35:03) CEO of Crash and Founder of Praxis

  • Find something besides a degree to add to your resume to show your skill, and you have done something.

    • Intern for free to learn the skills
  • Do not be afraid to fail or experiment to find the solution
  • Dominate your niche
  • Two main things matter in the market place
    • Create Value
    • Prove you can create value
    • Don’t do things you hate
    • Don’t do things you are terrible at
  • Your resume needs to be more than bullet points
  • Narrow down the companies you are applying to and do something extraordinary
  • Find a need and show it to them (make them a Facebook page and give it to them, send them a logo if it is low resolution, offer to work for free)
  • Create a project that shows your skills in a tangible way

Anthony Vargas (1:02:03) 7 Jr. High Tips

  1. Know the name of Jr. High Students, leaders, and parents.
  2. Every Monday, pick five students and send them a letter.
  3. Try to interact with Jr. high students five senses when teaching the Bible
  4. Embrace their digital world
  5. Go out and evangelize with your students. They need to see it lived out.
  6. The feedback of students is vital.
  7. The only thing they need from you is a heart that has been with Jesus.

Discussion Questions:

  1. How are we strategically using our game time? What should we start doing, stop doing, and keep doing?
  2. Have you/we reached out to someone outside the church for a meeting? If so did you/we honor them or leave a bad taste about you or our organization? How can you/we improve?
  3. What is your unique intersection of skills and abilities?
  4. Do we know all of our volunteer’s names? Do they know their kid’s names?
  5. What have we learned from our students? When was the last time we asked them (if ever)?

Recruiting Volunteers—Justin and Kurt

  1. Why Summer is the best time to recruit leaders

    • You have a lot of fun events and gives people a taste of students at their craziest. Get a leader to see the beauty in that and they will go crazy over them in group.
    • You can’t take the summer off from recruiting cause fall is coming
  2. Language to use
    • What did you do last year to say you moved the needle on spiritual life in me and around me?

      • No matter the answer ask them about investing in a Jr. High Student this year. Everyone had someone or wished they had someone and they can pay it forward or be the person they needed.
  1. Don’t say someone’s no for them

    • Make the ask and let them say no. Don’t be afraid to ask
  2. Have a 2-3 minute elevator pitch
  3. Your best recruiters are people already serving and attending.
    • Who in their circle can they ask?
    • Get students to ask.
  4. Invite them into something specific
  5. Don’t have eyes bigger than your stomach
    • Are you ready if you grew by 10 leaders tomorrow? Is there is a plan and process in place so they are not in the queue for 6 months?

Katie Edwards (DYM Podcast and Saddleback Church)

  • Connecting with females in your youth ministry

    • Focus on the times you are with them weekly. Have those spaces to have significant conversations.
    • Healthy touch is important
      • A high five is touch. It does not always have to be a hug.
    • Great eye contact and get rid of distractions. Give warmth in your voice and how you ask questions
  • Keeping volunteers
    • Create a family community that will minister to the family (their students)
  • Katie-isms to cast vision and leadership
    • People over protocol, people over programs. Love people well. The goal is love and care for people if they are in the church or not.
  • Innovation and Newness to the ministry
    • Never Stop Learning. Learning leads to innovation
    • Evolve with what’s best for the kids—think of new ways to communicate
    • When brainstorming make sure you have different thinkers, ages, and other
    • different types of people
    • Don’t skip the debrief—successful idea/event or not
  • Make sure you understand the audience. The more you know the lower your frustration will be and help you be more effective
  • Practice and experience things together with a middle schooler. (serving, learning scripture, etc)
  • Missions
    • Getting them into environments with they partner with the local church in other spaces

      • Expands their view of the kingdom
      • Helps them see outside of themselves
    • Middle schoolers are fearless and are willing to step into things and having a life changing experience like that can get them into next level ministry
    • Find an organization that your church trusts to take care of the “scary stuff” and then you can just be with the students

Mike Branton (Christ in Youth)

  • Environments—Where you meet is just as important as what you are meeting about

    • How will they hear if we are not intentional about the space
    • First impression for families
      • You may only get one chance with a parent. Make your space so it looks like you knew they were coming.
    • You don’t have an excuse for not being intentional with what you have
    • Having a clean space is vital.
    • It is an act of worship to have a clean space (Think tabernacle in OT)
    • Things your environment should help communicate
      • Signage (from street to seat)
      • Safety
      • Specific age (how do we say this space is for you)
      • Broken window (kids will break more and trash it) if it is pristine they will be less likely to break and dirty it up.
    • Portable is key if the space is not yours
      • You can’t just leave your stuff if it is a multi-purpose room
    • Sometimes make the space smaller (30 kids in a 300 person room is daunting). Curtains or defined spaces within the environment. Have a goal to fill it.
    • Celebrate the things that you want repeated
      • Camp, baptisms, volunteers. Use the walls, floor, bathroom to tell a story
    • You are trying to creature culture and environment is a lot of that.
      • Your environment should drive the mission home not make people want to drive home
    • Talk to parents, students, and student leaders about what they think of the space
