Student Leadership Tip #4 (Mark Oestreicher)

  • Consider a leadership community rather than single serving leadership teams

    • All the teams in one
    • Adult and student leaders

  • Servant leadership (Kurt)
  • Following up on visitors (Kurt)
  • Don’t be a click (Kurt)
  • Plan an event (Kurt)
  • Honesty and timeliness (Kurt)
  • Generosity (Kurt)
  • Leverage Influence (Kurt)
    • Compassion
    • On marginalized people
  • Don’t do it alone (Justin)
  • Accountability (Justin)
  • Skill of assessment (gifts and wiring) (Justin)
  • Give feedback (Justin)

Charlie Kirk, Turning Point USA

  • A strong message can create a strong movement
  • Students are looking for a purpose to believe in
  • People are not correct just because they have degrees and someone else is a student
  • It just takes one person telling a student that they can do something good
  • Always ask more questions than you get asked
  • Don’t look at any interaction as a waste of time
  • 1 thing to tell students—embrace failure. Everyone will fail at something

Mark Oestreicher

  • There is no reason why student leadership should be reserved high schoolers. Give them a taste of the leadership inside them if they are willing.

    • If you have them combined let the jr. high lead too in it
    • If you have separate have one in the jr. high ministry also
  • You want them to participate in things that will form them in powerful ways as their identities are being formed

Excellence in Jr. High Student Leadership Justin, Kurt, and some spiders

  • Give them opportunities to be involved

    • Don’t make your excellent definition so high they cannot participate
    • They will be wrong, but you need to affirm them in a positive way
  • The best way to learn leadership is to learn it in the trenches
    • They love to see their friends owning things
  • Ask other areas if they are open to serving in other areas besides children’s ministry and jr. high ministry
    • It gives them another caring adult in their life

Kenda Dean Student Leadership

  • If you want kids to be engaged as adults get them engaged as children
  • Give them a “load-bearing” role
  • Don’t hold on to tight to the reigns—never do ministry alone
  • With a team, you can share the authority
  • You need a diverse team in outlook and demographics (cause that what the kids are)
  • You must be a trustworthy colleague
  • Learn to pastor your bosses (teach the kids to care for those in authority)
  • Learn how to do youth ministry to grown-ups.
    • We are good at meeting kids where they are but not adults.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Where are our students serving?
  2. Are we allowing middle schoolers to serve as leaders?
  3. Does each of us have someone to do youth ministry with?
  4. Are we meeting our adults where they are as good as we reach our students?

Justin and Kurt “answer” questions by Scott Nolan

  • How do you narrow do student leaders?

    • You have to know whatever model you choose may be hurting feelings of students who are not involved.
  • What are some topics students need to hear, discuss, and live out?
  • Resources for student leaders?
  • How do you do a student leader retreat?
    • Just like a camp. Decide where you want to go and tweak accordingly
    • Is it just for the best of the best or is everyone invited and at the end of the week do you decide if you want to promote a smaller leader retreat with the cream of the crop.
    • Don’t market it a fun and zany weekend.
    • Have students help plan the retreat
    • High can be the best time to develop leaders.
  • Size of the student leadership team?
    • There are options for everyone

Marko 5 Tips on Student Leadership (in no order)

  • Some of your best student leaders are the ones who wouldn’t apply or participating. Be a competency facilitator. Identify and nurture potential

    • Get to know your context and students
    • Help the ones see the leader in themselves
    • You need to see the strengths in them that they cannot
    • Give them places to experiment with that

Jeff Wallace on student leadership

  • Think

    • Discover our student’s talents and gifts—then develop it—and deploy them.
    • We don’t want to teach kids what to think but how to think.
    • We teach what we know but reproduce what we are—John Maxwell
    • If the IPhone is upgrading every 18 months why shouldn’t we think youth ministry is?
    • Help kids understand their wiring. Give personality tests.
    • Teach them more than the word. Teach how to live out life.
    • Always asses. You cannot correct what you cannot confront. Bring in someone from the outside to get an honest look and see your blind spots.
  • Dream
    • Once you teach them to think. Have them dream not only what they can do but what the ministry can do. What would you do if you knew you wouldn’t fail?
    • Have a youth council or leadership team and write the dreams.
    • You need kids who are not completely connected. The best way to reach outsiders is to know outsiders.
    • Vision Casting is key to get this set up.
  • Lead
    • This is a byproduct of thinking and dreaming. What happens is that they begin to become leaders that are head and shoulders above.
  • Random question
    • What about students living different outside of church?

      • Hold them accountable. Other students are watching you and you need to confront them. But do it with grace and respect.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Are there students who have potential but aren’t participating?
  2. Are we being “competency facilitators”?
  3. Are we “developing and deploying” our students?
  4. Are we teaching kids how to think?
  5. Are we holding them accountable?

Whose on this episode?

Justin Herman Host

Kurt Johnston Host

Michele Anderson, Host Talking Squirrels Podcast

Samantha, Girl World EXPERT

Dr. Andrew Root, Youth Ministry Theology EXPERT

Jeff Wallace, Student Leadership EXPERT

Why mic skills are essential with Justin and Kurt

  • If the audio is terrible everything is terrible no matter how good the video/graphics
  • If the person is ill-prepared no matter how much planning it will drain the energy of the room
  • Consider using a handheld—the audio quality is much better and you can use to your advantage with its distance
  • Students will see a potential future for themselves in the person on the microphone
  • Never give the mic away if you don’t know what they will say.
  • If you don’t know whether to use a mic or not—use a mic
  • You have to train people on how to be on a mic—it is not a natural thing

Why you should tune into the CIY webcast

  • It's on the internet, and the internet is awesome
  • Where else do you get a half hour of training for free?
  • This is stuff you can give to your leaders.
  • It is not long and drawn out (only 1 hr)
  • Everything is more significant (than the first) with this webcast
  • It will be encouraging and give you a different way of thinking about things

Scott Rubin—Director of Student Ministries at Willow Creek Church—pastoring with high school in mind

  • Look at them and imagine where they will be in a few years

    • What do we need to be thinking about?
  • Identify gifts in those years and put them on that track to develop it
    • Think ahead but do not get ahead of themselves
    • Give them opportunities to leverage it
    • Sometimes the disruptive kid is the leader. Talk to them about it
  • See if there is an upperclassman that they could be and have them hang around them.
    • Call out to them what you see in them
    • Engage the parents in any way that you can. Some kids might not show themselves, and parents can be a great insight.
  • With leaders moving up or not always remember where you are trying to get the students.
  • Never forget what it is like to be a teenager
  • Never do youth ministry alone

Mike Thomas—Why we stayed podcast

  • Everyone that has stayed/left a different story but they all have friction.

    • How will you respond?
  • When church and God are blended, they become upset with everything. Their whole idea is broken.

Michele Anderson—talking squirrels podcast—adolescent development

  • Early adolescence 10-13
  • It can help to tailor to how the schools do it
  • Reasons for a 7th-9thministry
    • With longer adolescence, students need more time to develop
  • How can we give coaching on mental development
    • Ask them hard questions—they can handle it
  • The psychological difference between boys and girls
    • Girls will grow faster in every way

Samantha—Jr. High Girls

  • The enemy is attacking mainly through technology. Distracting us. And taking away our identity in Jesus with something else.
  • Women should not prove their ability by everything that men do cause men do not do that for women.
    • Elizabeth Elliot—Let me be a Woman
  • Topics Girls need to hear
    • Love, Suicide/depression, homosexuality, technology
  • Always express love

Dr. Andrew Root

  • There are so many things that students need, does God need anything?

    • Don’t think that God needs anything
    • But He is a God that acts for us
    • Out of the love and inner love of the Trinity out of the surplus of their passion they reach out to share their love
    • God chooses to become vulnerable because of his compassion, mercy, and friendship
    • He reaches out for a desire to love and care not because he needs it

Jeff Wallace—Student leadership

  • Gather at most one a month or once a quarter

    • They are busy (and so are their parents who drive them)
    • Have a good plan because time is precious
    • It is not about a shirt or a title
    • Leadership is about keeping your word—have them value being on the leadership team.

Mark Oestreicher  #13 thing he loves about Jr. High Students

  • You can still take ‘em

Ben Trueblood(Lifeway Students, Director of Student Ministry)

  • Parent Ministry

    • How do you get parents to embrace their role as spiritual leaders?

      • Use different phrasing and equip them. Many do not know how to disciple. So disciple the parents. By: Groups for parents, or student pastor jumping in, or partner with other ministry environments. You can start with a few parents and then send them out to disciple others.
      • Don’t try and be a Subject Matter Expert on parenting if you are not.

Jeff Wallace(Right Now Media, Director of LYFT tour and Youth Pastor Summit)

  • Student Leader Selection Process

    • No need to be rooted or long but you need a step to make sure they are serious

      • Ask Grade
      • Ask their passion
      • Ask how they define leadership and why they want to lead
      • Put references but don’t make a big deal (ask for a teacher or coach who has seen them lead)

Caleb Kaltenbach (Founder of The Messy Grace Group)

  • How do you handle LGBTQ?

    • You need to be having conversations about this, so you do not overreact when it happens.
    • Ask questions and set appropriate boundaries. Ask questions and do not throw out Bible verses.
    • Thank them for trusting you and dig deep to get to know more
    • You must be comfortable with them coming and not correcting everything they do
      • Still, need boundaries like with heterosexual students
      • Dating couples in different cabins and groups
    • Your job is not to fix them
    • It is your job to help them identify with Jesus more and make that their primary identity
    • It is not about behavior anymore but more about how they identify
    • Be intentional in all things you teach and how you reach (1 Cor. 9:19-23)
    • Trans-students?
      • Tread carefully. You do not want to embarrass or humiliate a student. Each situation is different, and conversations are essential.
    • Always remember to live in grace and truth
